Hello and Welcome to my Blog!
YAY! I'm sew excited to be participating in the Volume 14 Blog Tour -- it's like a quilt party with all my friends -- both old AND new.
My block is called SLIDER and is #1383 in Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 14.
A lot of people ask me how I come up with my designs. Let me tell you that it definitely isn't rocket science. LOL! I like to start with something familiar like a favorite block, an inspiration piece of fabric, or maybe even an idea. Then I usually sit down in front of my computer to use my Electric Quilt 7 software. Do you EQ? If not, then I really suggest that you try it out because it can take your quilting and designing to new levels.
When I started playing around with ideas for the 100 Block project, I first decided that I wanted to use red, black, grey, and white fabrics in the block. That made me determine that my block had to have enough pieces so that I could use 4 fabrics.
This was my first block attempt. Ugh. Pretty ugly, isn't it?
I was trying out some asymmetrical qualities here.
This was my second try. Hmm. Much better, I think. But too busy.
Maybe I should reduce the number of pieces in the block.
Voila! There you have it! A peek inside my design process.
Now let's play with the Slider block a little bit.
Five blocks and a border makes a fun table runner, doesn't it?
Maybe we should add some printed fabrics instead of just solids?
Here it is in Moda's For You fabrics.
Now let's try it in Riley Blake's new Crayola fabrics. Fun and cute!
Here we have fabric from Benartex's Kitchen Love line. Yum yum yummy!
That was fun, wasn't it?
Auditioning blocks, layouts, and fabrics is all part of the quilt design process.
Thanks for coming along for the ride.
BUT WAIT....................DON'T GO.....................THERE'S STILL MORE!
KEEP READING......YOU'LL GET TO THE GIVEAWAYS SOON, I PROMISE!!!

Although I was introduced to using precuts with a layer cake, and loved it, I now know that fat quarters are the best way to go for creating with freedom :) It is so nice to have a little bit extra of each fabric. Thank you for offering this giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI love to use charm packs. Love your blog.Dippetydoo52@ymail.com Thank you.
ReplyDeleteFat quarters! 24Tangent@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI love jelly rolls and charm packs as precuts. I have followed your blog for quite some time after attending classes that you teach. tavidog@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteI love precuts and have several shelfs full just waiting for time and that special project. Of course fat quarter collections are best as you get so much more to work with, but alas they are expensive for a whole collection, so I've discovered layer cakes give me a little more room to cut out lots of different sized little pieces. But hey Jelly rolls are pretty amazing as well. So love a little of a whole collection.
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog as well
ReplyDeleteMy all time fav precut is the10 " squares- so versatile.

ReplyDeleteCurrently my favorite precut is a layer cake...so many possibilities with it. Looking forward to seeing your book.
ReplyDeleteI am a charm pack junkie - I can't pass them up. Love the slider block (especially in a table runner) - may make one for the cat (a table runner fits perfectly in the bay window) to sunbathe on. I am in love with them because of the variety you get and they are great for mini's which I also love.
ReplyDeleteI signed up to follow your blog.
ReplyDeleteNow following on Instagram too.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite pre-cut is truly the FQ bundle, but that is such a big expense that I never buy it. So, practically, it is a tie between a layer cake because I can see--and get a big cut of--the design, and a jelly roll, because I am a wonky cutter and I rejoice when someone else has cut those long strips straight.
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog on Blogger.com
ReplyDeleteHands down it is Jelly Rolls! I just hate to open them though....
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the book and block! Wow, what an accomplishment. I do not use pre cuts so I do not have a favorite. :) Vivian

ReplyDeleteI have really mixed feelings about precuts. I like the fact that I can get all the fabrics in a line at once and so I don't have to think about choosing fabrics that go together. I really dislike the pinked edges that so many precuts have, though. In addition to that, my daughter has gotten charm packs where the pieces weren't a consistent size and some weren't even square. I think I need some education on precuts to be able to choose the best ones!
ReplyDeleteFat quarters! They are way to easy to pick up in any quilt shop. Love your block! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteCharm packs are my favorite pre-cut. They can be used in so many designs that make up quickly.
